Note: GG = Golden Goal (Team to score first goal during extra time wins and the match ceases).

Semi-finals: Knockout (Applies to ALL age groups)

The four top teams play a single knockout round and the winner of each game will proceed to the Final. The round will be 1v4 and 2v3.

In a semi-final match, in the case of goals being equal at the end of normal time, two 10 minute period of extra time will be played. A 5 minute break will be held in between the end of the normal time and the start of extra time.

There is no break in between the two periods of extra time.

The winner is determined as follows during that extra time:

• If goals are equal at the end of normal time, the team scoring the first goal in extra time wins and the match ceases.
• If there is no goal during the extra time, then a penalty shootout is held to determine the winner.

Finals

If goals are equal at the end of normal time:

• Premier League: Both Men’s and Women’s Premier Leagues will play extra time of 2x 10 minute periods (a 5 minute break between normal time and extra time, with no break in between extra time halves)
• All Other Age Group (U12 to ALs): A penalty shootout will be held to determine the outcome of the match.

Kicks from the Penalty Mark

Before kicks from the penalty mark start:

• Unless there are other considerations (e.g ground conditions or safety etc) the referee tosses a coin to decide the goal at which the kicks will be taken
• The referee tosses a coin again, and the team that wins the toss decides whether to take the first or second kick
• With the exception of a substitute for a goalkeeper who is unable to continue, only players who are on the field of play or are temporarily off the field (injury etc) at the end of the match are eligible to take kicks
• Each team is responsible for selecting from the eligible players the order in which they take the kicks. The referee is not informed of the order
• If at the end of the match and before or during the kicks one team has a greater number of players than its opponents, it must reduce its numbers by the same number as its opponents and the referee must be informed of the name and number of each of the excluded players.
• A goalkeeper who is unable to continue before or during the kicks may be replaced by a player excluded to equalise the number of players
• If the goalkeeper has already taken a kick, the replacement may not take a kick until the next round of kicks

During kicks from the penalty mark:

• Only eligible players and match officials are permitted to remain on the field of play
• All eligible players, except the player taking the kick and the two goalkeepers, must remain within the centre circle
• The goalkeeper of the kicker must remain on the field of play, outside the penalty area, on the goal line where it meets the penalty area boundary line (see diagram below)
• An eligible player may change places with the goalkeeper
• The kicker must kick the ball forward; back-heeling is permitted provided the ball moves forward
• When the ball is kicked, the defending goalkeeper must have at least part of one foot touching, or in line with, the goal line
• The kick is completed when the ball stops moving, goes out of play or the referee stops play for any offence; the kicker may not play the ball a second time
• The referee (along with any assistant referees and 4^th official if appointed) keep a full record of the kicks
• If the goalkeeper commits an offence and, as a result, the kick is retaken, the goalkeeper is warned for the first offence and cautioned for any subsequent offence(s)
• If the kicker is penalised for an offence committed after the referee has signalled for the kick to be taken, that kick is recorded as missed and the kicker is cautioned
• If both the kicker and goalkeeper commit an offence at the same time, the kick is recorded as missed and the kicker is cautioned

Subject to the conditions explained below, both teams take 5 kicks

• The kicks are taken alternately by the teams
• Each kick is taken by a different player, and all eligible players must take a kick before any player can take a second kick
• If, before both teams have taken 5 kicks, one has scored more than the other could score, even it was to complete its 5 kicks, no more kicks are taken
• If, after both teams have taken 5 kicks, the scores are level, kicks continue until one team has scored a goal more than the other from the same number of kicks
• The above principal continues for any subsequent sequence of kicks but a team may change the order of the kickers
• Kicks from the penalty mark must not be delayed for a player who leaves the field of play. The players’ kick will be forfeited (not scored) if the player does not return in time to take the kick

Substitutions and sending-offs during kicks from the penalty mark:

• A player, substitute or substituted player may be cautioned or sent off
• A goalkeeper who is sent off must be replaced by an eligible player
• A player other than the goalkeeper who is unable to continue may not be replaced
• The referee must not abandon the match if a team is reduced to fewer than seven players

Other considerations:

A player who has been sent off during the match is not permitted to take part; warnings and cautions issued during the match are not carried forward into kicks from the penalty mark. A player who receives a YC both during the match and during the kicks from the penalty mark is not sent off.

Positioning:

• The referee takes up a position that allows for view of the ball, the penalty kick taker, the goalkeeper, and the assistant referee.
• The assistant referee is positioned where the goal line and goal area line intersect so that he/she can determine whether the ball has wholly crossed the line or if the goalkeeper has committed an offence (referees and assistant referees MUST communicate with each other prior to penalty kicks to confirm what decisions the assistant referee is to call – as some referees prefer their assistants to only judge whether the ball has wholly crossed the goal line).
• The assistant referee should ensure that the goalkeeper not partaking in penalty shootout at the time, must be positioned where the goal line intersects with the penalty area line. This is keep the goalkeeper out of the view of the goalkeeper partaking in the penalty shootout and prevent any distractions.

Record Keeping:

• All officials appointed MUST keep a full record of the kicks from the penalty mark,
• The following example shows a scenario where all 5 kicks to each team have been taken. In this scenario, Curl Curl have scored 4/5 penalties, whereas Brookvale have only scored 3/5. Therefore Curl Curl is the winner:

• The following examples shows a scenario where Curl Curl have missed 3/5 of their shots whereas Brookvale have scored 3/5. In this scenario there is no way that Curl Curl can score 3 penalties since they only have 2 more shots out of the 5 left. As a result, the penalty shootouts are concluded here and Brookvale are deemed the winners. There is no need to complete the remaining 2 rounds of penalties.

 

• In the scenario where both teams are tied at the end of their 5 penalty takes, it goes to sudden death until one team scores and the other misses. If both teams score in the same round, or miss in the same round, the penalty takes continue, until one scores and one misses.
